Tie Dyed Knits!

by

Have you ever tie dyed your knits? I’ve always wanted to but was nervous that I wouldn’t like the result and cry about all of the time I spent knitting. I’ve definitely had my tie dyeing efforts on my own clothes go south, but at the same time, sometimes they turn out amazing! Ultimately I decided to be brave and try something new. I had some white fingering weight yarn in my stash from Knitcrate that was meant to be experimented with and dyed, so I knitted up my “Girly Knits Bra Top” and “Lounging My Best Life” pants pattern on my knitting machine and gave it a go. Thankfully, they turned out as fun and colorful as I was imagining!

The dye that I used was a highly rated kit that I found on Amazon in “Unicorn” colors, which you can find here. My vision was to have an ombre effect of pastel colors. While these colors were a bit brighter than I was going for, you can’t deny that they are fun! I invited some friends over to tie dye their white goods alongside me, and it was a lot less nerve racking doing this process with their support. As you can see, all I did was tie rubber bands around sections of the top and pants, and use a different color dye for each section. The second photo was the set in a bucket after I rinsed the dye out, which clearly did not fade!

Part of the fun of tie dying is that you do give up a bit of control, and let whatever colorful artistic magic is going to happen happen. It was very exhilarating to take off the rubber bands and ultimately see the end result. Here is the finished set below, I like to describe it as what I would look like if I collided with a rainbow!

I hope you enjoyed seeing this knitting tie dye journey and perhaps inspires you to give tie dying your knits a go!

All You Knit is Love Sweater Pattern

by

all you knit is love sweaterToday I am so excited to share that “All You Knit is Love” is now available to download on Ravelry!  This sweater pattern was originally designed for The Fiber Factor Knitting Design Contest Challenge #2 “Knit Inside the Box”.  We were challenged to design a boxy sweater that incorporated creative colorwork, using up to 8 colors.  I thought it would be fun to revisit this design and give you a behind the scenes look at my creative process and inspiration.  Hope you enjoy!

Inspiration

When we first got this challenge I was a little overwhelmed with possibility because I LOVE colorwork.  If you are familiar with my designs you know that I use colorwork quite frequently, and just love color in general!  Because of that, I wanted to experiment with some new  techniques that I had not seen done and had never tried out before, and really push myself to be creative.

all you knit is love criss cross heart and shoulder detail croppedMy first idea was to create a heart argyle pattern using cables.  I hadn’t seen it done before in knitting the way I was envisioning it, so I thought it would be fun to try out.  Off to swatching I went, and after much trial and error, I figured out a technique I was happy with.  Basically there are 2 single cables, and when they cross, there’s an intarsia heart behind them.  It’s kindof like you’re knitting love into your sweater, and I loved the idea of that! 🙂

The other inspiration I had for this sweater was to use big block letters to create a bold statement message, a popular trend at the time.  I had seen this image of a storefront in Barcelona that I had previously posted about, and it stuck with me – the perfect phrase would be “All You Knit is Love”!  I thought it would be fun to play with colorwork inside the letters, and was also very inspired by the trend of bright pastel colors.  I had seen images of artwork by pip & pop in one of my trend reports at work, and I was obsessed with the color scheme and wanted to use a similar palette for my design.  Fun fact – even though I designed this sweater in 2013, I am still loving pastels!  They really stuck with me 🙂

ombre sweater

I had also seen this sweater at Urban Outfitters and loved the idea of creating a similar ombre effect for this challenge.  Now that was the challenging part, because we weren’t offered color changing yarns for this challenge.  Hmmm….but onto the next step, choosing colors!

Skacel provided us with these awesome swatch cards to choose our desired colors, which they would normally offer to their wholesale clients.  It’s not always that we would get the actual yarns to look at and play with, sometimes it was just pictures of the colors, so this was especially nice for this challenge.  You could actually take a small cutting of the yarn off the page and place it next to another one – this was beyond helpful in creating my pastel rainbow of colors!

hikoo simplicity color swatches

So I ordered my yarn and hoped for the best.  Much to my delight, the colors were beautiful and went really well together!

all you knit is love back word detailExecution

Now to figure out how to create the ombre effect I was hoping for.  I charted out the block letters and was playing with ideas.  My first idea was to have a stippling effect where the colors changed – kind of speckled and fair isle looking.  This indeed turned out to look more like fair isle than ombre so I tried again.

I had seen some knitted designs where the yarn was held double with the same color, then held together with the transition color, then to double of the transition color.  This technique really seemed to be the most successful in creating a smooth gradient.  I hadn’t planned to double ply my yarn with this design though, so I thought, what if I un-plied the yarn to half the plies, did that with the transition color, and then held them together and knitted them?!  I tried this out and indeed it worked.  Now, this isn’t the easiest or most practical thing to do, but it was a creative solution to the problem and it looked great!

In case you’re wondering what the inside of this sweater looks like…here it is!  Needless to say, finishing this chart felt like a HUGE accomplishment!  I had a lot of fun, however, watching it take form 🙂 all you knit is love intarsia insideThe heart argyle or “heart-gyle” as I like to call it 😉 became a theme in this pattern, which I incorporated into the front, back, and a fun elbow patch!

all you knit is love front  all you knit is love sleeve

all you knit is love side

I also enjoyed adding this mesh lace shoulder insert for some fun and flirtiness 🙂  Now, I have to admit, when I finished this design, I was like yeah, there’s a lot going on, and the judges confirmed that worry!  I honestly did just have so many ideas and wanted to use THEM ALL. While I do love all of the bells and whistles and think they ended up working together in a special way, the great thing is that because this is a knitting pattern, you can customize it however you want!

I think it would be fun to have a plain stockinette front with just the words to speak for themselves in the back, to use the heart argyle pattern all over the front and back, or to make the the entire sweater in stockinette and just have a fun pop color of mesh lace at the shoulder inserts.  It’s really like you’re getting 3 sweaters in 1 as there’s so many ways you can knit this sweater!  You could even knit the shoulder inserts in stockinette in the base sweater color for a more toned down look.

I’ve posted about this sweater a few times on Instagram recently and the message was clear  – you want to knit this design!  I appologize for not getting it out sooner, I honestly didn’t realize so many people would want to knit it!  I am thrilled that you do and CAN’T WAIT to see how you interpret it!  The pattern is now available on Ravelry for download here:

How to Knit a Bra Top Video Knitting Tutorial and Free Pattern

by

how to knit a bra top video tutorialHey awesome knitter!  Today I am super excited to share with you a brand new Girly Knits design, which is a free pattern (woohoo!) that comes with a step-by-step video tutorial (double woohoo!).  In the video that you’ll find below I walk you through each step in the pattern, so even if you are a beginner knitter, you will be able to make this bra top!

The pattern uses worsted weight yarn and is knit in the round as one piece, so it will knit up quickly with minimal finishing. This design is quite simple and straight forward as well, so if you want to add a stitch pattern, do a different type of ribbing, do something fun with the straps, etc., I encourage you to do so and make this bra top uniquely your own!  And in case you are wondering what a bra top is, it could be a bralette (if you don’t require a lot of support!) or it could be a cropped tank top – either way you wear it, it’s super cute and comfy!

I like wearing my knitted bra tops with a bra underneath, and think it’s perfect for lounging around in (shown below with my “Cables and Curves” skirt pattern), as a crop top with a skater skirt for going out in (how I’m wearing it in teal below and in the video paired with a cardigan), or as PJs! (shown below paired with my “Gorgeous Shorties” pattern).

girly knits knitted bra top optionsThe bottom ribbing portion of the bra top is totally customizable to suite your desired length of the top, and your choice of worsted weight yarn is up to you.  To give you an idea of some options, the 1st top has 3″ of 1×1 ribbing and is made with Knit Picks Chroma Worsted in Avalon, the 2nd top has 5″ of 2×2 ribbing and is made with Knit Picks Swish Worsted in Marine Heather, and the 3rd top (which I make in the video) has 7″ of 1×1 ribbing and is made with Naturally Caron Country in Deep Purple (stash yarn, unfortunately this yarn has been discontinued!)  I have a 35″ bust and made the size Small for all of the tops pictured above.

I hope you enjoy this pattern, and when you finish it, please be sure to post pictures of your bra top on Ravelry!  You can find the pattern page here.  I’m also hosting a knit-a-long for this bra top where you can share your progress, connect with other knitters, and ask questions in the Girly Knits Fan Club forum page here.

Alright, here we go!  You will find the video, materials needed, and pattern below 🙂

If you would like a .pdf download of this pattern, which includes extended sizes, instructions for knitting this top on straight needles, and using any yarn/gauge/measurements you’re working with, check out my new updated version of this pattern on Ravelry called the “Get if Girl” Bra Top!

Materials:

200-300 yards of worsted weight yarn

My favorite yarn for this project was Knit Picks Swish Worsted (shown in Teal).  I used 2 balls (approx 220 yards) for the Small Size with 5″ of ribbing.

US 5 (3.75 mm) 24” circular needle

US 7 (4.5 mm) 24” circular needle and set of 2 double pointed needles

Gauge: 19 sts and 27 rows = 4″ in Stockinette Stitch using larger needle

Make sure to check your gauge!  The size 5 needle is only used for the ribbing.  If you need to change needle sizes from the size 7 to get the Stockinette Stitch gauge, use a needle 2 sizes down for the ribbing.

Notions: Stitch markers, tapestry needle

Sizes: Women’s XS (S, M, L, XL, 2XL) to fit a 32 (34, 36, 38, 40, 42)” bust.  If you are between sizes I would recommend going a size down.

Finished measurements: 27 (28.75, 31.25, 32.75, 34.5, 37)” circumference at underarms.

Abbreviations:

k: knit

p: purl

rnd: round

st(s): stitch(es)

M1L: make 1 by picking up bar between sts through front and knit through back loop

M1R: make 1 by picking up bar between sts through back and knit

dec: decrease

ssk: (slip 1 knitwise) twice, insert LH needle into slipped sts and k2tog through back loop

ssp: (slip 1 knitwise) twice, slip sts back onto LH needle and p2tog through back loop

k2tog: knit 2 sts together

p2tog: purl 2 sts together

RH: right hand

LH: left hand

RS: right side

WS: wrong side

Directions:

Bottom Band:

With smaller needle [CO 58 (62, 68, 72, 76, 82) sts, place marker] twice – 116 (124, 136, 144, 152, 164) sts. Join, taking care not to twist sts. (video: 1:48)

Work in 1×1 (k1, p1) or 2×2 (k2, p2) rib for desired length. See info below picture showing all 3 tops for how long I made the ribbing for each top. (video: 3:37)

Bust:

Change to larger needle and knit 5 rnds, working to last st before start marker on the 5th rnd: (video: 5:59)

Inc Rnd: M1R, k1, slip marker, k1, M1L, k to 1 st before side marker, M1R, k1, slip marker, k1, M1L, k to end – 120 (128, 140, 148, 156, 168) sts. (video: 8:02)

Rep Inc Rnd every 6th rnd 2 more times, starting Inc Rnd 1 st before the start marker as before – 128 (136, 148, 156, 164, 176) sts after all inc rnds.

For the 38”, 40”, and 42” bust, or if you have a D+ bust (or if you want more coverage!), work 3 more rnds, or desired length of back. (video: 11:21)

BO Back:

K4, BO with a firm tension until there are 3 sts left before the side marker – 72 (76, 82, 86, 90, 96) sts left on needle. Cont the row as follows (you will already have 1 st on your RH needle): (video: 11:52)

Ssk, k to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1 – 70 (74, 80, 84, 88, 94) sts. (video: 13:11)

Next Row: Purl.

Dec Row: K1, ssk, k to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1 – 68 (72, 78, 82, 86, 92) sts.

Repeat last 2 rows two more times, removing markers as needed – 64, (68, 74, 78, 82, 88) sts.

Next row: P32 (34, 37, 39, 41, 44) sts, place marker to mark center, p to end. (video: 14:57)

Wearer’s Left Cup:

The Wearer’s Left Cup and strap will be worked first, then you will work the Wearer’s Right Cup and strap.  If you want to work the cups simultaneously, you can join a 2nd ball of yarn at the center to work the other cup at the same time, referring to the instructions for Wearer’s Right Cup.  The basic formula for the decreases is that you will decrease at the underarm every RS row, and at the neckline every row.

Row 1: K1, ssk, k to 3 sts before center marker, k2tog, k1 – 30 (32, 35, 37, 39, 42) sts. (video: 15:42)

Row 2: Turn work and P1, p2tog, p to end – 29 (31, 34, 36, 38, 41) sts. (video: 17:10)

Repeat last 2 rows until 6 sts remain.  If you end after working a WS row, k across.  If you end after working a RS row don’t do anything.  If you end with 7 sts after a working a WS row, k4, k2tog, k1.

Straps:

Work in i-cord for desired strap length. (video: 18:13)  I made my straps about 11” long – I would recommend checking the strap length of a tank top that is adjusted to fit you, then do a little extra.  It’s easier to take out length if they are too long then to add it after cutting your yarn!  BO and leave a 5″ tail for sewing straps to top. (video: 21:27)

Wearer’s Right Cup:

Join yarn at center of Bra Top (the first row will be on the RS of your knitting) and work as follows: (video: 22:10)

Row 1: K1, ssk, k to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1 – 30 (32, 35, 37, 39, 42) sts.

Row 2: P to last 3 sts, ssp, p1 – 29 (31, 34, 36, 38, 41) sts.

Repeat last 2 rows until 6 sts remain.  If you end after working a WS row, k across.  If you end after working a RS row don’t do anything.  If you end with 7 sts after a WS row, k1, ssk, k to end.

Work strap same as other strap.

Finishing:

Pin straps to back edge of bra top.  Try on and adjust strap placement and length as needed. Using a tapestry needle, sew straps to back edge of bra top. (video: 24:27)

Weave in ends and enjoy!  If you liked this pattern, make sure to check out more of my patterns at girlyknits.com/patterns!

Behind the Scenes at Knitting Daily TV!

I am super excited and honored to have been chosen as a featured guest on the awesome, inspiring, educational knitting television series, Knitting Daily TV!  I was part of series 1300, which is currently airing on PBS this Summer.  To check out the schedule for Knitting Daily TV in your city, click here.

That is me below with host Vickie Howell after we filmed our segment!  You may recognize my cowl neck dress from my final collection for “The Fiber Factor”, I was so happy I got to borrow it back to wear for the show 🙂

lauren_riker_vickie_howell_knitting_daily_tvI was featured in episode #1307 “Boy Meets Girl”, which also features Josh Bennett, our mentor from The Fiber Factor!  He shared how to add masculine touches to your knitting, while I discussed how to add feminine touches.  I also did a demonstration on how to knit my signature bow.  Here is a preview of the episode below!

We did the filming back in February at a special set in Ohio.  It was my first time doing anything like this and was such a cool experience!  I got to get my makeup done, and see the inner workings of a TV studio.  While waiting for my turn to go on set, I got to hang out in the “green room” with the other guests and got a preview of the other episodes in the series.  Here is Vickie below doing the intro for episode #1301 “Nature Knits”!

knitting_daily_tv_on_setI met a lot of other super awesome knitters and designers while I was there that I got to knit and chat with, including Gwen Bortner, Myra Wood, Heather Zoppetti, Tanis Gray, and Katie Startzman!  You may not know Katie, but she just published a a super cute book called “The Knitted Slipper Book“.  Her and her husband made the most adorable knitted stop motion video trailer for it!  You can check it out here, it is guaranteed to make you smile! 🙂

Tanis and I found out that we were on the same flight home so we got to hang out and get to know each other better!  She’s a super cool gal!  There we are below rocking our knitted hats at the airport 🙂  She has a really cool segment at the end of each Knitting Daily TV episode where she shares her favorite knitting tools.

lauren_riker_and_tanis_greyMy episode “Boy Meets Girl” #1307 should be airing this week or next week in most parts of the US!  To check out when it’s airing in your city, you can go to this site and enter your zip code to get your local listings:

I absolutely love the look of knitting combined with sequins.  It seems to be a trend as I have been seeing more yarns incorporating it.  I love Loops and Threads Dewdrops yarn (which I used for my Snow Princess design), and have been looking for a lighter weight one that I can use for future designs.  Have you used yarn with sequins and what do you think?  Have a favorite one?  These sweaters are so pretty, the sequins add so much charm!
